Dr. L. Wayne Vickers
Dr. L. Wayne Vickers

Dr. Wayne Vickers has more than twenty-six years’ experience as a teacher and administrator in public school districts throughout Alabama. He has served as principal at the elementary, middle and high school levels in a variety of diverse settings, with additional experience at the district and state level.

Dr. Vickers has a proven record of increasing student achievement and stakeholder involvement in all areas. He is knowledgeable of each component of the school improvement process and its implementation. He has direct experience with federal programs and all facets of pupil support services, and has coordinated a variety of capital improvement projects, including new school construction, classroom additions and athletic complexes.

In July 2013, Dr. Vickers was introduced as the first superintendent of education for the newly-formed Alabaster City School System, with over 6,000 students across six campuses.  Since that time, the district has completed a five-year strategic plan to guide the system and gained AdvancED District Accreditation. Dr. Vickers is currently leading a $100 million construction project with plans for a new high school facility, including career technical academies and athletic complex.

From 2009 through 2013, Dr. Vickers served as superintendent of education for the Saraland City School System after its separation from Mobile County Public Schools. He was instrumental in the opening of the new Saraland High School campus and athletic complex, renovations to Saraland Middle School, and helped dedicate the new Saraland Elementary School facility in summer 2013. He previously served as superintendent of education for Demopolis City Schools and has additional experience in the Birmingham Public Schools, St. Clair County Schools, Tuscaloosa City Schools, Tuscaloosa County Schools and Coffee County Schools, as well as with the Kentucky Department of Education.

Dr. Vickers is an adjunct professor of School Law at the University of West Alabama. Dr. Vickers is married to Pamela Copeland Vickers. They have two sons, Jordan, a student at The University of Alabama, and Will, a student at Thompson High School.
